The Planet, Radio National, Australia

“I for one would love to see Claire with a cloned sister of herself in a live performance as both her flute and fiddle playing are faultless.”
Pete Fyfe, Folking.com

“Mann’s fabulously fluent flute is the dominant melody instrument here (well, she is an all-Ireland champion) but she’s very potent on the fiddle too.”
Norman Chalmers, Scotland on Sunday

“Claire on fiddle, flute, whistle and singing showed true musicianship on all.”
Orcadian, Orkney Folk Festival

Biography

I come originally from Newcastle upon Tyne in the north east of England and have performed from a very early age to establish myself as one of the leading exponents of traditional Irish flute, fiddle and tin whistle in the country. I have won numerous ‘All Ireland’ championships on flute and tin whistle and was honoured to perform for the renowned British Flute Society who described my performance as, “…astonishing.”

My current projects include touring with bouzouki player, singer and guitarist extraordinaire Aaron Jones (Old Blind Dogs/Kate Rusby). Together we released our first album ‘Secret Orders’ in 2005 which quickly went on to became a favourite amongst both our peers and traditional music lovers.

I also currently work with the Scots/German collaboration Litha, which features Aaron and the fabulous German musicians Gudrun Walther and Juergen Treyz, both members of the award winning band Cara. Together we have produced two critically acclaimed albums, ‘2Duos – Unitl the Cows come Home’ (2010) and ‘Dancing of the Light’ (2012).

Before moving to Dumfries and Galloway two years ago I had spent many years living and playing on the vibrant music scene in Edinburgh. At the age of sixteen I teamed up with fiddler Aidan O’Rourke (Lau/Kan) to form the band Tabache. We released two albums, ‘Are you Willing’ and ‘Waves of Rush’, and toured extensively throughout Europe and the USA.

In 2001 I released my debut solo album titled ‘Claire Mann’ which also featured my partner Aaron Jones. Over the years I have been lucky enough to tour with a great range of bands and musicians including Old Blind Dogs, Craobh Rua, Christy O’Leary, Nuala Kennedy and the Tom McConville Band.

Aside from my performing career, I am also highly sought after as a traditional music tutor. I was the flute and tin whistle tutor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in Glasgow for 10 years and continue to teach flute and fiddle regulalry at Newcastle University.

I am also currently teaching at the Tolbooth Traditional Music Workshops in Stirling and for Dumfries and Galloway Councils collaboration with Feis Rois, offering an introduction to traditional music in primary schools. As well as running workshops at festivals around the world, I have also taught at the Folkworks Summer Schools, Strathclyde University and Stevenson College in Edinburgh.
